Children massage

Gentle massage for children to support development, muscle tone and calm sleep.

Children's massage is a distinct field in which techniques designed for adults cannot simply be scaled down to a smaller body. A child's skin is thinner, muscles and ligaments are softer, bones are still growing, and their capacity to stay still is entirely different. For that reason children's massage is carried out by practitioners with specific training, and the child's age is always taken into account. Infant massage, preschool-age massage and massage for teenagers look very different in practice.

A session is usually short and calm. With small children it is often framed as play - a song, a rhyme, a story - so the child stays at ease. The therapist works with light stroking, gentle friction and very moderate kneading, avoiding the spine, the front of the neck and any forced movement of the joints. For infants, only light warm strokes and slow movements are used. The room should be warm, the lighting soft, and one parent normally stays nearby and in view. A child always has the right to say they do not like something; if that happens, the treatment is stopped or changed.

Children's massage is most often used as a general wellbeing and relaxation treatment: after a demanding sports session, after a long school day, when a child seems generally tense, or when settling down before sleep is difficult. Parents frequently notice that their child falls asleep more easily afterwards. One distinction matters enormously here: if a child has a medical concern - postural problems, hypertonia or hypotonia, scoliosis, a neurological diagnosis, developmental delay - this is no longer a spa treatment. In such cases massage is prescribed by a doctor and delivered by a certified paediatric therapeutic massage specialist or a physiotherapist, and that is the only correct route. Never start a therapeutic course of children's massage on your own initiative.

Duration depends on age. For infants 10-15 minutes is usually enough, for preschoolers 15-25 minutes, and for school-age children and teenagers 25-40 minutes. A longer session simply is not needed: attention runs out and the benefit does not increase.

Contraindications need particularly careful attention. Children's massage is not performed with fever or any acute illness, infectious disease, skin rashes, wounds, eczema or infected areas, recent injuries and fractures, acute abdominal pain, hernias, bleeding or clotting disorders, or with cardiovascular and oncological diagnoses. If a child is tired, hungry, upset or simply unwilling, the session is postponed. Before a first visit it is always worth consulting your family doctor or paediatrician, especially if the child has a chronic condition.

A practical closing tip: schedule the session for a time when your child has eaten but not just finished a meal - roughly an hour afterwards works best. Bring a familiar toy or towel; familiar objects help a child settle in an unfamiliar room. And ask the practitioner which simple strokes you can safely repeat at home before bedtime - for many children, that short, calm touch from a parent becomes the favourite moment of the day.
