Other massage

Other massage styles and signature techniques not covered by the categories above.

Behind the widely recognised forms of massage - classic, relaxing, sports and therapeutic - sits a whole range of lesser-known techniques. They are usually grouped under the heading of other massage types, and the category is considerably broader than it first appears. Each approach has its own logic, its own rhythm and its own limits, and practitioners often blend elements of several within a single session, adapting to the person in front of them.

One of the most popular groups is myofascial work. It focuses not on individual muscles but on the fascia - the connective-tissue sheaths that run throughout the body. The movements are slow, deep and sustained; a therapist may stay in one place for a full minute, waiting for the tissue to release. A related approach is trigger-point therapy, which works on tender, tight spots within muscles using precise, targeted pressure. These methods are usually chosen by people with persistent, recurring tension in the back, shoulders or hips.

Another large group is reflexology - massage of the feet, hands or ears, built on the traditional idea that particular points correspond to different parts of the body. Whatever one makes of the underlying theory, many people find the treatment distinctly calming, and foot massage is one of the easiest ways to reset after a long day on your feet.

Aromatherapy massage combines the gentle movements of classic massage with essential oils diluted in a carrier oil. The pace is slow, and the emphasis falls on the overall experience rather than on deep muscular work. Related to it are the relaxation and sound formats - sessions with singing bowls, quiet music or elements of conscious breathing - where the touch is light and the main goal is to settle the nervous system. Worth mentioning separately are the cupping-adjacent methods that use silicone cups or wooden tools, along with dry brushing and the various body wraps that spa programmes often combine with hands-on work.

Duration varies widely across this category. Reflexology and aromatherapy usually take 45-60 minutes, myofascial work and trigger-point therapy 30-60 minutes depending on the area treated, while relaxation and sound formats tend to run 60-90 minutes. Shorter 20-30 minute versions normally address one specific region.

Whichever technique you choose, the safety principles are shared. None of these treatments is performed with fever or acute illness, acute inflammation, recent injury, broken skin or rashes, thrombosis or thrombophlebitis, bleeding and clotting disorders, or with an oncological diagnosis without the agreement of your treating doctor. During pregnancy, only specially adapted versions are appropriate. Essential oils can provoke an allergic reaction, so mention sensitive skin and any allergies in advance. And finally: none of these methods is a way to treat disease, and none replaces a consultation with a doctor.

A practical closing tip: when choosing something from this broad category, do not hesitate to ask what the session will actually involve - whether oil is used, whether you need to undress, how deep the pressure will be, and whether you can stop at any point. A clear conversation beforehand is the best way to avoid unpleasant surprises. And if a practitioner promises to cure a specific illness, take that as a signal to look for someone else.
