Lymphatic drainage massage

Gentle massage that stimulates lymph flow, reducing swelling and toxins.

The human lymphatic system is one of the most sensitive we have. Over time the body tires of fighting off illness, unhelpful habits accumulate, and weight creeps up as a result. A sedentary lifestyle, poor air quality, an unbalanced diet and constant stress all lead to lymph flow slowing down considerably.

That is why specialists often suggest lymphatic drainage massage to people with a weakened immune system, fluid retention, disrupted metabolism or a tendency to swelling. The procedure can have a beneficial effect on how the whole body feels, so its value should not be underestimated.

During lymphatic drainage massage the flow of lymph speeds up, so organs and tissues clear metabolic end-products faster and, in turn, receive more oxygen and nutrients. Waste products leave the cells more easily, inflammatory processes settle sooner, and even long-standing swelling recedes. Lymphatic drainage is also frequently recommended for reducing the appearance of cellulite, since it helps clear the excess interstitial fluid that contributes to the "orange peel" effect.

Lymphatic drainage massage should be performed by an experienced practitioner, who first works through spasms and tension step by step and only after this preparatory stage begins to "pump" the lymphatic system.

Manual lymphatic drainage follows the course of the lymphatic vessels (from the bottom upwards) in the direction of lymph flow, with soft, wave-like movements. Some people, feeling the relaxing effect, fall asleep right on the massage table. There is no pain involved, and the calming effect works well even on an over-stimulated nervous system. At first glance lymphatic drainage may seem superficial and gentle. And so it should be, because this massage works on blood and lymph vessels, and strong pressure on them can have unwanted consequences.

Lymphatic drainage massage is built on knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system, taking each person's individual rate of lymph flow into account.

Lymphatic drainage can give good results with pronounced swelling, and also with varicose veins - after consulting a doctor. It is included in body-shaping programmes as well, since lymph flow can be impeded when vessels are compressed by fatty tissue. Lymphatic drainage combines well with various weight-management methods, including device-based treatments. The by-products released as fat is metabolised are cleared more easily after a massage, because the body's drainage function improves.

For general health and well-being, lymphatic drainage massage may be suitable for almost anyone; the length of a course and the frequency of sessions depend on the particular complaints and diagnosis.

Various detox programmes include courses of lymphatic drainage massage in their protocols, and it combines well with seaweed wraps, rejuvenating treatments and deep cleansing with therapeutic muds.

Most often a course of lymphatic drainage consists of 10-12 sessions, held several times a week. After a full course many people report that headaches become less frequent, long-standing fatigue eases and the contours of the body improve. Results, however, are individual.

Lymphatic drainage massage is not suitable in cases of acute inflammation, fever, thrombosis or thrombophlebitis, heart or kidney failure, skin infections or oncological disease. During pregnancy or with a chronic condition, consult a doctor before starting a course.
