Riežupe Sand Caves (Riežupes smilšu alas), Kuldīga

The Riežupe Sand Caves are in Kuldīga and form a network of underground labyrinths about 2 km long in total. As of 2021, 460 metres of the labyrinth were open to visitors, at depths of up to 10 metres below ground.

On the tour you have to walk through the labyrinth slightly stooped, but it also has several chambers where you can stand up straight and look around. Eight metres down is the Hall of Love, where newlyweds come on their wedding day and leave flowers: there they can keep for several months without water. A little further on is another chamber where visitors make their most secret wish.

Bats live in the caves. During the visit in April 2021 most of them had already woken and flown out, but the oldest residents were still there.

Practical information

Entering the caves without a guide is forbidden. A family ticket cost 15 euro as of 2021.
