Āgenskalns Market (Āgenskalna tirgus), Riga

Āgenskalns Market (the older name is the Hagensberg Market) is the largest market in Pārdaugava. It covers an area of more than 8,300 square metres, and its building, built of red brick, is a striking example of Riga's rational Art Nouveau.
The market opened in 1898; it is the largest and oldest in this district and holds the status of a cultural monument of state significance.
Construction of the building, designed by Reinhold Georg Schmaeling, began in 1911. The First World War halted the work. It was finally completed in 1923, and in 1925 the interiors were fully finished.
In May 2022 the market opened its doors again after a four-year closure for restoration. At the same time it was announced that the second floor would also host various events - exhibitions, performances and concerts.
